Yes, the slaughter man has what was known as a ‘Pole Axe’ resting over his shoulder. This would be swung as with any axe, striking the animal ‘hopefully’ in the right spot with the pointy bit. In 1933 when the government introduced the Slaughter of Animals Act these axes were banned from use.
