Recently found for sale on ebay was this horse brass made by Thomas Ellacott Piper (1882-1978). Thomas was a saddler and harness maker who lived in High Street in the early 1900’s.

The son of Samuel Piper and Jane Ellacott he married Louisa Gooding in 1906 and they had 3 children. In WWI Thomas was in the RA Ordnance Corps and saw service in the Balkans.

Having moved away Thomas returned to Hatherleigh in later years to be nearer his grandchildren and lived for a time in South Street.

If you know of other artefacts made in Hatherleigh we’d love to hear about them!
